Here's what's making news in the tri-states...
H1N1 third wave...or not dhw
Local Health Department officials are hoping
we're through the flu season. And among them
is Jeff Kindrai, the Director of the Grant
County Health Department, who's been worried
about a third wave of the H1N1 virus hitting
the region. The Health Department is back at
local schools making sure students are properly
vaccinated. About 30% of students received a
shot the first time around. A second dose is
needed to ensure full protection.
----dash----
While H1N1 has been the top issue this flu
season, a similar ailment has not been as
prevalent as it was in the past.
"What's been interesting this flu season
is the relative absence of the seasonal flu
this year. We still might get hit. But it
seems to be not as much as a factor as it
has been in previous years."
The flu season typically runs through the
month of March, and sometimes into April.
PVille Main Street Director resigns dhw
The Director of the Platteville Main Street
Program has decided to resign. Cheryl MacDowell
has submitted her letter of resignation, with
her final day being April 30th. MacDowell says
she has enjoyed her time with the program, and
that she plans to continue volunteering and
being an advocate for it.
----dash----
She feels the Main Street has fulfilled several
goals she set for it when she was first hired.
But MacDowell says Main Street now has another
set of goals to accomplish, and someone else
would be the best fit for the director's position.

MacDowell owns a downtown business in Platteville,
"Wine Down on Main."
Grant County Sheriff's deputy suspended dhw
The Grant County Sheriff's deputy who's been
suspended with pay, has been identified through
the search warrant filed last Friday in Grant
County Court. Twenty-six-year-old Curtis Gillilan
of Lancaster is being investigated for his alleged
contact with a high school student. The warrant
says the girl's mother reported that Gillilan
and her teenage daughter were kissing in a squad
car in 2008. The warrant also says Gillilan sent
the girl pornographic pictures, and she also
watched him perform a lewd act on a webcam.
Gillilan has been a sheriff's deputy for the
past three years. Last September, the Grant County
Sheriff's Department was made aware that a complaint
had been filed with the Wisconsin Department of
Criminal Investigation, concerning Gillilan.
The complaint had coincided with an internal
investigation by the Sheriff's Department, but was
based on heresay type evidence and couldn't be
substantiated by investigators from the Sheriff's
Department. Gillilan had been taken off patrol and
reassigned to other duties within the department,
pending the conclusion of the DCI investigation.
The warrant was served last Thursday, and computer
equipment was seized by State investigators.
The warrant says they were looking for evidence
of the crime, causing a child to view or listen
to sexual activity, and exposing a child to
harmful material or narration.
Fennimore considering a change in City slogan dhw
Since 1991, Fennimore has officially been known as
the "City on the Move."
That official city slogan may be changed, depending
on how city residents vote in an upcoming ballot.
Fennimore Promotions Coordinator Linda Parrish says
the idea to consider a new city slogan, came up late
last year. It was during community meetings about
Fennimore's future.
"It was brought up by several of the different
break-out sessions that it might be time for us to
consider a new logo and slogan. So we decided that
we would move forward with those ideas, and ask
the public what their thoughts were."
Residents will get a chance to vote on the proposed
slogans, on a ballot that'll be included in their
March 1st utility bills. Each household will get
one vote. They'll be able to vote until March 19th.
What are the slogan options in Fennimore dhw
There are six different proposed slogans that
Fennimore residents will have the chance to consider.
They are...
Fennimore. The Crossroads of Opportunity.
Expect more, do more, be more. Fennimore.
There's More in Fennimore.
Imagine More in Fennimore.
Live more, learn more, play more. Fennimore.
The City on the Move.
That last slogan is also the current one, which
is among the six being considered. Again,a ballot
will be included in the March 1st utility
bill in Fennimore.
