Get rid of your e-waste at Clean Sweep event   dhw

Wisconsin's new e-waste law will find a lot
you wondering what to do with old cell phones,
computers and televisions. The answer is a
Clean Sweep event coming up on September 11th
at the Agriliance Agronomy Center in Lancaster.
Not only will old farm chemicals be collected,
but Resource Solutions of Madison will be
there to help you "recycle that stuff."
Brian Wood is the interim Grant County Resource
Agent.
"You can get rid of any electronics, and
computers. There isn't a fee for more computers
or electronic devices such as lap tops, keyboards
or cell phones."
However, there will be a fee to get rid of your
old television.
"Which is $30, for 30" and under, and $50 31"
and over, as well as $5 for larger appliances,
and $15 for freon items."
You don't have to pre-register your e-waste
items, just bring them down to the clean sweep
event on September 11th.
Clean Sweeps for ag chemicals and e-waste will
also be held in Iowa County at Dodgeville on
September 18th, and in Lafayette County at
Darlington on September 25th.

Mold at Winskill caught before school started
dhw

You've heard about the mold problems in
the Middleton School District. The Lancaster
School District had a mold problem of its'
own at the Winskill Elementary School.
Fortunately, a teacher doing some prep work
two weeks before school, noticed a musty
smell in some of the classrooms. District
Administrator Rob Wagner says several area
rugs that had just been cleaned apparently
caused the problem. With warm humid weather
and enclosed spaces, it led to a slight film
of mold on doors, cabinets and chairs in
some of the rooms. Wagner says the rugs were
thrown out and rooms on the lower level of
the school were cleaned and disinfected.
"We did an air quality test. We had a
company come in and do an air quality test,
that told us we were fine to go ahead and
start school. There was actually more mold,
and pollen in the air outside than there
was in the building, and that we just
extremely low amounts that they found,
that would be nothing to worry about."
An open house event for students and parents
at Winskill Elementary that was cancelled
because of the mold, will be held today.
It's from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm. An open
house is also being held for students and
parents at the Lancaster Middle School.
That's from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.

Chicago man cited for drugs in Jo Davies County
dhw

A Chicago man is facing multiple charges after
Jo Davies County authorities investigated a
vehicle that had been parked along Ford Road.
The vehicle was reportedly involved in a
traffic accident, as both front air bags
had deployed and had a lot of front end damage.
Deputies investigated and found the vehicle
is registered to Bryan R. Harlan of Chicago,
Illinois. While deputies were there, Harlan
returned to the vehicle. That's where they
learned the vehicle had gone off the road and
hit a tree.
After investigation, Harlan has been cited for
drunk driving, failure to reduce his speed, and
two counts of possession of a controlled
substance. That's because of illegal contraband
that was recovered as a result of the
investigation. The accident happened early
last Friday.

Lafayette County motorcycle crash   dhw

Two people have been treated at Memorial
Hospital of Lafayette County after a motorcycle
accident Tuesday afternoon in the Town of
Shullsburg. Lafayette County authorities say
43-year-old Robert A. Miller of Schaumburg,
Illinois was driving north on County-U when
he lost control of his cycle on a curve.
Miller and a passenger on the cycle,
30-year-old Kristina Zacharova, also of
Schaumburg, were both thrown from the vehicle.
The cycle had to be towed from the scene.
Shullsburg firefighters, Shullsburg Ambulance,
and Shullsburg Police helped Lafayette
County deputies.

Platteville City Manager to retire    dhw

Dave Berner has decided to retire. Platteville's
City Manager says his last day will be January 2nd...
he told the Platteville Common Council his decision
last week. Berner will have worked just over 30-years
in local government administration, three years in
Platteville. He was hired in June 2007.
Berner says a combination of factors have helped
him to make this decision, including his health.
"You know, when you just add up everything. One
of the things I said to the council is that I've
been in Platteville for three years, and I'm
sorry I can't stay longer and provide a little
more longevity to the position. But it has been
32 years for me, in this profession."
Berner is 55, and has been dealing with high blood
pressure, which led to a emergency room visit last
month. Berner says he did not suffer a heart attack.
----dash----
Berner first entered public service in 1978 when
at age 23, he was elected Mayor of the City of
Rice Lake (Wisconsin). At the time, he was the
youngest mayor in the State of Wisconsin.
Later he worked in local government administration
in Connecticut, Menasha, Tomah, and then Monona,
before coming to Platteville.
What will he miss most ???
"The aspect of my job that I really enjoy is
the community. The contribution that one can
make in this position, to improve the community."
Berner feels the City of Platteville is positioned
well for success in the future.
