It used to be a basketball court. But since the 1980s, a lot on the corner of 19th and Percival streets in Hazel Green has slowly transformed into a memorial park for local veterans. A committee formed in the 2000s to progressively add to what was then a modest monument, and the culmination of its work came last fall with the addition of large “roll call stones” in the shape of a compass, with inscriptions of the names of about 600 area veterans and etchings of military scenes. A weekend ceremony and celebration marked the official opening of the new memorial.
