Iowa Secretary of Agriculture says Iowa is ready to protect against screwworm

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig said the state “stands ready” to protect livestock and farmers from screwworm. Naig’s statement came in a press release issued Friday, two days after the U.S. Department confirmed the nation’s first case of New World Screw Worm was detected in Texas. Screw Worm is a parasitic fly that infests and feeds on warm-blooded animals, including humans. A sample from a Texas calf was tested and confirmed to be infected by the USDA’s Veterinary Field Services Laboratories in Ames. The parasite poses no risk to food safety.

Bob Middendorf grew up on his family’s dairy and livestock farm near Galena in Jo Daviess County, Illinois. He studied broadcasting at Brown Institute of Broadcasting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He got involved in farm broadcasting in the early 1980’s, working in Dubuque, Iowa and later for a Farm Network based in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He joined WGLR Radio in 1998. Bob is a member of the National Association of Farm Broadcasting. He has two grown daughters, Tracy and Kati.

Bob has hosted tours to Alaska, Hawaii, New England, California, Ireland, Germany, Florida, Louisiana, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, Panama, Nashville, New Orleans and more!

DATCP selects 79th Alice in Dairyland

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has selected a new Alice in Dairyland. Anastasia Poull of Port Washington has been selected as Wisconsin’s 79th Alice in Dairyland. Poull earned three bachelor’s degrees in animal science, agricultural leadership, and agricultural science, with two minors in agricultural business and communication studies. Poull was announced at the 79th Alice in Dairyland Finals hosted by Marathon County. She will begin her term as the 79th Alice in Dairyland on July 6. She succeeds the 78th Alice in Dairyland, Sarah Hagenow of Poynette, who will continue her current term until the transition in July.

DATCP announces nominees for Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin Board of Directors

The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) announced eleven nominees for nine open seats in the 2026 Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin (DFW) Board of Directors election.
Nine districts are up for election, which began on May 1. In District 22, which covers Grant County, Patrick R. Schroeder of Lancaster was the nominee and the District 25 nominees, which covers Green, Rock and Walworth counties are Kristen Metcalf of Milton and Chaz Self of East Troy. The Department has confirmed all certified candidates met the administrative rules and have certified each candidate’s nomination form. The Department is mailing ballots to dairy producers who reside within the nine affected districts. Completed ballots must be signed and returned on or before May 22, 2026. Elected producers will serve three-year terms July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029.

UW Platteville National Soils Contest

UW-Platteville National Soils Contest

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Collegiate Soils Team placed 4^th in the recent National Contest hosted by North Carolina State. This was the largest National Soils Contest in its 64 year history with more than 300 students representing 28 universities. The UW-Platteville Soils Team totaled 2702 points, just 3 points behind third place Maryland. Sophomore Jake Scheckel of Dodgeville placed 6^th in the individual portion of the contest. By placing among the top eight individuals, Scheckel will be representing the United States at the World Soil Judging Championship to be held this June in China.. He is the fourth UW-Platteville student in the last 12 years to qualify for the World Competition.

New Wisconsin Farm Bureau District 3 Coordinator

The new Wisconsin Farm Bureau District 3 Coordinator is Emma Wallace. Emma grew up on her family’s dairy farm near Belmont in Lafayette County, where she continues to play an active role alongside her family.

she holds bachelor’s degrees in dairy science and agricultural business from UW-Platteville.

- As District 3 Coordinator, Emma will work with county Farm Bureaus to develop programs, recruit members, and retain existing ones, serving Crawford, Grant, Iowa, Lafayette, Richland, and Vernon counties.

Deere Reaches a Settlement in Right to Repair Litigation

Deere & Company announced it has reached a settlement in a “right to repair” lawsuit filed in 2022, bringing the case to a close without any admission of wrongdoing. The agreement, pending approval from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, resolves claims related to customer access to equipment repair resources. Under the terms, Deere will contribute to a class settlement fund to compensate eligible members and cover legal and administrative costs.

Applications open for 79th Alice in Dairyland

Applications are now open for the next Alice in Dairyland. Those interested have until January 30th to apply to be the 79th Alice in Dairyland. Applicants should have an interest in Wisconsin agriculture, public speaking experience, and be at least 21 years old. The current Alice, Sarah Hagenow, says the job is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Alice travels across Wisconsin and promotes the state’s agricultural industry and its impact on the state’s economy. More information on the position can be found on the Alice in Dairyland website.

Wisconsin Soybean Association speaking out against potential drone ban

Wisconsin Soybean Association is speaking out against a potential drone ban after the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) banned the import and sale of all new drone models made by foreign manufacturers. This ban includes the world’s largest drone maker DJI, adding them into a Covered List of entities deemed to pose an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States. The agriculture group said drones play a crucial role in helping farmers with production costs, monitor crop health, and work more efficiently. The FCC said it received a National Security Determination on Sunday that all Unmanned Aircraft Systems or UAS and critical components must be produced in the US to avoid “direct UAS attacks and disruptions, “unauthorized surveillance, sensitive data exfiltration, and other UAS threats to the homeland.”
