A 54-year-old northeast Iowa man died after falling into the Mississippi River Saturday afternoon while fishing near Guttenberg. Officials with the Iowa DNR say Shaun Oppenheimer of Quasqueton was pronounced dead at an area hospital. Oppenheimer and another person had been fishing by the spillway of Lock and Dam #10. The DNR says their boat got caught in a turbulent area and took on water. Oppenheimer wasn’t wearing a personal flotation device, though officials say that life jackets were onboard. A DNR report didn’t list any injuries for the unidentified operator of the boat. Multiple agencies from both Iowa and Wisconsin responded to assist at the scene. The DNR is still investigating the case.
