The Grant County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate reports of a person impersonating a sheriff’s deputy. A report from the sheriff’s office says a Grant County citizen was pulled over between 7 – 7:30 a.m. Thursday near Hazel Green. The citizen said the vehicle was an older style black Chevy Impala with red and blue lights mounted in the upper windshield, as well as a spot-light on the driver’s door. Officials suspect it is a decommissioned squad car.
Authorities say the suspect was wearing a light brown uniform top and black pants, however he was not wearing a badge or ID tag. The suspect came to the reporting person’s car door and asked where he was going. When the person said he was on his way to work, the suspect informed the driver the State of Wisconsin was shut down and the driver needed a permit from his employer to drive, but would “let it slide” this time.
The suspect is described to be a white male in his mid-30’s or early 40’s with short brown hair and some stubble for facial hair. It appeared he wasn’t armed. Officials say Richland County had a similar incident reported Tuesday with the same physical description of the offender. If anyone has information regarding this incident, or they see a vehicle matching the description, they are asked to contact the Grant County Sheriff’s Office or their local authorities right away.
