Grant County officials say some railcars derailed into the Mississippi River this morning when a BNSF freight train hit a large boulder on the tracks. Reports say the derailment happened around 11am below a bluff between where the Platte River connects with the Mississippi and Fenley State Recreation Area, and it is across the river from the peninsula near John Deere Dubuque Works. The BNSF freight train appeared to be heading north along the Mississippi River. The Grant County Sheriff’s Department and area fire departments on both sides of the river are among the agencies responding. No injuries have been reported and officials with Grant County Emergency management don’t believe anything was leaking.
