A man from Shullsburg was arrested after crashing his vehicle on private property in Darlington Sunday. Shortly after 1am, a Darlington Police Officer was on routine patrol when he observed a vehicle accelerating at a high rate of speed on Galena Street. The vehicle failed to negotiate a turn onto Hill Street and crashed into a yard, causing significant damage to the vehicle and property. The operator of the vehicle, 28 year old Douglas Champion, then fled on foot from the scene. After a brief foot pursuit, Champion was taken into custody without incident. Champion suffered some minor injuries in the crash. As a result of an investigation, Champion was arrested for OWI, and is being charged with resisting/obstructing an officer and operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, which are being forwarded to the Lafayette County District Attorney’s Office. Champion was also cited for failure to maintain control and unreasonable and imprudent speed. Champion was taken to the Lafayette County Jail where he remains on a probation hold.
