After years of competency hearings and mental health treatment, 23-year-old Riley Berg pled guilty to the 2020 smurder of Navy vet Nicholas Day. Berg, a former UW-Platteville student, pled guilty to 1st-degree intentional homicide during a hearing in Dane County Monday – more than two years after Day’s body was found on the side of a rural road. Prosecutors say Day was jogging when he was shot and cut in what authorities called a “brutal homicide.” The two didn’t know each other. Berg’s trial was delayed several times as his defense argued he was not mentally fit to stand trial. His sentencing is set for April 4. Berg faces a mandatory life sentence, but could be granted parole.
