Greg Gard, Mark Johnson and other Badgers coaches get extensions through 2027

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball coach Greg Gard is among a half dozen head coaches getting their contracts extended through 2027, the athletic department announced Friday.

Gard is coming off one of his most successful seasons at the helm of the men’s basketball team, winning Big Ten Coach of the Year honors as the Badgers went 25-8 and won a share of the Big Ten conference championship before a disappointing exit in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Gard has gone 144-78 as the head coach after taking over for his mentor, Bo Ryan, during the 2015-2016 season.

Women’s hockey coach Mark Johnson also received an extension Friday, with his new contract taking him through June 30, 2027. Johnson has led the Badgers to two national championships in recent years, bringing a trophy home to Madison in the 2018-19 and 2020-21 seasons. The Badgers have been a national power under Johnson, compiling a 522-92-46 record since he took over in the 2002-2003 season.

Men’s hockey coach Tony Granato also received a contract extension through 2027, after athletic director Chris McIntosh confirmed earlier Friday that Granato would be returning despite going 10-24-3 overall in the 2021-2022 season. The disappointing season came on the heels of a Big Ten title in 2020-2021.

Among the other Wisconsin head coaches receiving extensions through their respective 2027 seasons include women’s basketball coach Marisa Moseley, swimming and diving head coach Yuri Suguiyama, and wrestling coach Chris Bono.

It’s the latest round of contract extensions for Badgers head coaches, after football coach Paul Chryst and volleyball coach Kelly Sheffield were among those who received new deals in January.
