The jury trial of Laurie and Alexis Barry of Mineral Point is continuing in Dodgeville. The Barry’s are charged with first-degree reckless homicide for the May 2018 death of 13 year old Selah Kaden, who was under their care at the time. One of the witnesses District Attorney Matt Allen called to the stand was Dr. Michael Stier, a forensic pathologist that conducted Kaden’s autopsy. Stier ruled the girl’s cause of death as “homicidal suffocation.” In court, evidence photographs were displayed showing abrasions and bruising to Kaden’s body of which Stier said were caused by more than one person beating her. With the amount of injuries, Stier said he did not believe this was a case of self injury at all. Under cross-examination, Laurie Barry’s attorney, Jessa Nicholson, questioned Stier about this case and a previous trial he testified in. In Nicholson’s opening statement, she said Stier has misled juries before. The trial, which was previously expected to last two weeks, is now expected to conclude early next week, as the defense will call their own expert witnesses Monday.
