The Wisconsin Department of Ag, Trade and Consumer Protection plans to start setting thousands of spongy moth traps around the state to help monitor the species’ population. In a release, DATCP said it will set more than 10,000 traps in 47 counties starting in mid-May and running thru early June. Traps are set to be placed in areas including – Grant, Green, Iowa, Lafayette, Richland, and Sauk counties. The traps do not control the spongy moth population – formerly known as gypsy moth – but instead help state officials know where to focus spraying efforts next year and where to check for egg masses in the fall. The traps, small green boxes attached to trees, are set to be removed in August.
