Lancaster City Administrator David Carlson did not have positive news for Common Council members during last week’s meeting regarding a proposed workforce housing project. According to a report, in March, the city landed a $3.4 million state grant to address housing, with the intention of it being put toward the development of 40 new units of workforce housing by developer Wisconsin Management Company. The housing would be for those making 80% to 120% of the median household income in Lancaster, which equates to between $43,000 to $65,000 annually. In Carlson’s report, he said the city was looking for alternative sites that may be more suitable rather than proceed with development at Schacht Field. When asked by Council Member Matt Pennekamp why the property on the city’s north side was no longer being considered as a possible site, Carlson said he didn’t think the property could be used for the proposed development without it taking a long time to work through several issues. Carlson added that he didn’t think the city would be able to acquire a property to make it possible, so other alternatives are being explored.
