The Minnesota native joins a Predators team that hasn’t been able to reach the same heights that they did in 2017, when they smashed their way to the Stanley Cup Finals before falling to the then-defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins in six games.
Drafted by Montreal in 2007, McDonagh made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers in 2011. He spent eight years with the Rangers, appearing in two NHL All-Star Games, the 2014 Olympics and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
Throughout his NHL career, he has made 783 regular-season appearances, scoring 71 goals and providing 266 assists. He also has 185 playoff appearances and 12 playoff goals.
McDonagh played for the Badgers from 2007 to 2010 and was part of the UW team that made it to the 2010 Frozen Four before losing to Boston College in the National Championship.
In exchange for McDonagh, the Predators sent defenseman Philippe Myers and left-wing Grant Mismash to Tampa. Mismash spent the past season in the AHL with the Milwaukee Admirals, scoring six goals in 57 games.
