Chryst did not set a timetable for the senior’s return. Wolf has appeared in 10 games during his time in Madison, completing 15 of 25 passes for a total of 155 yards and two touchdowns.
The Badgers have two quarterbacks who will likely replace Wolf as Mertz’s backup. Redshirt freshman Deacon Hill is the more experienced of the pair, having spent last season with the team. Myles Burkett is a rising freshman, however, he enrolled early at UW and was part of spring camp.
Burkett holds a strong resume, should he be called upon. The Franklin native was named Wisconsin AP Player of the Year as a senior in high school and also won the Dave Krieg Award, given to the best high school quarterback in Wisconsin.
Regardless of who becomes Wisconsin’s QB2, neither has ever appeared in a game for the Badgers. Both will have to be ready when the season kicks off on Saturday at 6 p.m. when the Badgers host Illinois State.
