The Golden Eagles forced 12 turnovers, which allowed them to stay in the game. Marquette scored 18 points off turnovers, and 12 points on the fast break. The hosts also dominated in the paint, scoring 34 points in the interior compared to the Badgers’ 28. The Badgers were able to grab 15 takeaways, but only converted them into 10 points.
Wisconsin found its edge when cleaning up the glass. The Badgers posted 32 rebounds, including 10 offensive rebounds, while Marquette grabbed 26. Wisconsin was also successful from beyond the arc, hitting 12 of 27 three-pointers. Hepburn was especially effective from distance, draining 5 of his 6 three-point shots.
The Badgers put themselves in a corner when it came to fouls. Three different Wisconsin players tallied four fouls, and two Badgers committed three. Marquette converted 14 of their 20 free throws.
Four Badgers posted 10 or more points including freshman Connor Essegian, who scored 12 coming off the bench. Wahl led Wisconsin in rebounds with 7.
Despite the loss, it was a banner day for Marquette’s Kam Jones, who registered a career-high 26 points. He also grabbed 6 rebounds.
Saturday’s victory was Wisconsin’s 30th in team history when playing Marquette in Milwaukee. The Badgers lead the all-time series 70-59. It was only the sixth time the I-94 Rivalry has gone to overtime, and only Wisconsin’s third victory when the game has gone past regulation.
The win brings Wisconsin’s record to 6-2 and gives them some positive momentum as they head into Big Ten play.
The Badgers host their first conference foe of the season on Tuesday. No. 22 Maryland is coming to the Kohl Center with an undefeated record, including a win over No. 16 Illinois in their last game. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. CT.
