An attorney representing a 50-year-old Wisconsin woman accused of poisoning her husband entered a not guilty plea on her behalf during a court appearance Thursday. A report says Amanda Chapin, formerly of Monroe, is charged in Lafayette County with a felony count of attempted first-degree intentional homicide. She appeared in court Thursday afternoon for arraignment. A criminal complaint alleges Chapin’s 70-year-old husband was hospitalized in August after experiencing difficulty breathing. He later fell into a coma and blood tests showed he had barbituates in his system. The man, who is a veterinarian, had the barbituates at his home for euthanizing animals. After the man woke up, he told detectives Chapin poisoned him three times, once in July and twice in August. The two had reportedly been married only around five months at the time the man was hospitalized. He also told investigators his marriage with Chapin was “fairly stormy” and that he believed she was using him as a “sugar daddy.” The man has since filed for divorce.
