A new proposal in the Wisconsin legislature could mean licensed gun owners would be able to carry firearms on school grounds. The bill’s author, State Representative Scott Allen, says the goal is to allow school districts to add another layer of protection, if they want to. He says the idea for the bill came after the Germantown School District passed a resolution last summer asking the state to let them decide whether guns are allowed on their campuses. Allen says Wisconsin’s law, which is a statewide law, preempts local school districts from making their own decisions relative to the protection and safety of their students. Right now, Wisconsin state law makes all schools in the state gun-free zones. It’s something Allen says is a one-size fits all approach to a complicated issue. Under his bill, the question of guns on campus would be left up to every individual school district.
