The Mississippi River in Dubuque has begun its slow descent from its crest. According to the National Weather Service, the river had crested at about 24.3 feet around noon Saturday at the Dubuque railroad bridge. The river stood at 23.7 feet this morning. It’s expected that the river will steadily and slowly fall from now through the middle of May. Flood stage at Dubuque’s railroad bridge is 17 feet. Tim Gross, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, says the river won’t drop below that level for weeks. If fact, it won’t get below 17 feet until mid-May. The flood warning in effect for the river will remain in place until after the level drops below flood stage. Gross adds that, right now, the river flow is the fastest it is going to be.
