Authorities have revealed more details about a small plane that landed in a Jo Daviess County cornfield Sunday, including the name of the pilot. 69 year old Daniel Helsper of Anamosa, Iowa, was treated for minor injuries at the scene and released. According to a press release from the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were dispatched to rural Hanover at about 8:40 a.m. Sunday for reports of a possible plane crash. Witnesses said they saw a plane that appeared to be in distress flying low and never reappear. Emergency responders searched the area and located the pilot on Highway 84, near his airplane. The release states that Helsper was flying from Monticello, Iowa, to Poplar Grove, Ill., when he experienced engine problems. He tried to land in a hayfield, but the engine lost power as he was maneuvering to land and the plane crashed into a cornfield. An investigation into the incident was turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration.
