A crash that killed an Amish child over the weekend in rural Lafayette County happened in almost the same spot as a similar crash involving a horse-drawn buggy in June. An Investigation shows a single-horse buggy occupied by a family of six was heading east on Highway 81 toward Darlington Sunday night when a pickup truck hit it from behind. Lafayette County Sheriff Reg Gill said the crash is unfortunately something that authorities have responded to multiple times. Lafayette County Sheriff Reg Gill said the driver of the pick-up, 22 year old Carson Lobdell of rural Darlington, called in and said that he struck an Amish buggy. Lobdell told investigators he looked away from the road for a second before hitting the enclosed buggy. He looked back and saw the slow-moving vehicle sign but he didn’t remember seeing any lights. June’s crash on Highway 81 left a 19 year old Amish woman dead. Her 30 year old brother had serious injuries. Both crashes were within half a mile of each other. The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Offices does not expect the driver to face any charges. The crash remains under investigation.
