The Platteville Common Council voted Tuesday night on the site and design plan for a new fire station. The council approved a plan to build a one-story, 28,881-square-foot building with no basement and seven apparatus bays at the site of the OE Gray Early Learning Center on West Lewis Street in Platteville. The cost is estimated to be $14 million to $14.5 million, which is cheaper than previous plans for a two-story station, which proved too expensive after updated cost estimates came in higher than expected. Platteville City Manager Clint Langreck said the cost will be covered partially by a $7 million federal grant and the rest will be divided on a prorated basis between the municipalities within the fire district.
