Fundraising efforts continue with a goal to relocate and expand a southwest Wisconsin humane society. Grant County Humane Society has finalized the purchase of an 11,000-square-foot building at 500 E. U.S. Business 151 in Platteville, but the organization has not yet secured the funds to renovate the space. Approaching one year since the nonprofit announced its relocation plans, the humane society has secured roughly 41% of its initial $1.4 million fundraising goal with the hope of starting renovations in the spring. Humane society leadership had hoped to move into the space early next year, but Board President and veterinarian Cari Schaffer said plans were delayed when a donor pulled back a sizable donation. The renovation and relocation to the Platteville location are set to offer the shelter some much-needed space. The humane society currently operates out of Lancaster Veterinary Clinic, where it has six kennels for dogs and six for cats. Animals frequently are turned away due to lack of space, and it is difficult to host any large-scale community events to engage area residents with adoptable animals. The new shelter is approved to house up to 42 dogs and 60 cats per its conditional use permits with the city of Platteville. It also will include additional space for community programs and outreach efforts.
