Work on the Mississippi River Bridge at Lansing is reportedly on track, with officials still expecting it to reopen by the end of the month. In an update posted to social media on Tuesday, staff with the Iowa DOT said Kraemer, the company working on the bridge, placed four spans back in place on the new and improved piers. The bridge closed in February due to structural concerns after officials noticed some slight movement in two of the old bridge piers. “The new piers are supported by steel piling that go over 100 feet into the ground to bedrock compared to the old piers that sat on wood piling that was about 40 feet deep in the sand,” DOT staff said in the post. The bridge crosses the Mississippi River, connecting far northeast Iowa to Wisconsin. A free water-taxi service was set up last month to help people cross the river.
