On Monday, a 102-year-old veteran from Chippewa Falls was honored with medals for his service in World War II. Neil Korn was 19 years old when he joined the United States Army. He served in World War II and was deployed to East Africa and England during the invasion of France. Korn’s family reflected on his service and celebrated as Congressman Derrick Van Orden presented him with medals more than three-quarters of a century later. Korn was awarded five medals for his service in combat. He served among those who stormed the beaches of Normandy and spent the next 45-days picking up bodies and helping wounded soldiers. He then put himself on the frontlines fighting Germans during Battle of the Bulge. After Battle of the Bulge, he was held over in Germany where he was kept alongside a prison camp. Congressman Derrick Van Orden says Korn should have had these medals sooner.
