In July, Wisconsin Battery Co. will start a five-year lease on the approximately 10,000-square-foot former Family Dollar building on U.S. 61 on the north side of Fennimore. The company is also looking to expand into the building next door, the former World of Variety hardware store, by the end of the year. Wisconsin Battery Co originally hoped to purchase the Energizer facility, but a deal could not be reached. Construction started in April on a Wisconsin Battery facility in Portage. Due to space and equipment constraints, the Fennimore location will start as a packaging plant before eventually transitioning to a production facility. Eventually, the company hopes to produce batteries for various sectors of the economy, including the defense industry and electric vehicles. The decision to start as a packaging plant was made in order to open sooner.
