A Crawford County judge rules there was enough evidence to continue criminal proceedings against a Lancaster man accused of killing a man in Prairie du Chien in October. Jessie Jay Slaughter is charged with 1st Degree Intentional Homicide in the death of 65-year-old Daniel Welsch on October 25. During a preliminary hearing Tuesday morning, testimony came from Dr. Robert Corliss, the pathologist who examined Welsch. He testified that strangulation is the cause of death in this case. The criminal complaint also provided a timeline, based on a hallway camera in the apartment building where the homicide took place, of who entered and exited the victim’s apartment and what time. Based on the testimony presented, Judge Lukas Steiner found probable cause for further proceedings against Slaughter. He remains in the Crawford County Jail on a $250,000 cash bond. Slaughter returns to court on December 11 when he’ll enter a plea in the case.
