All Wisconsin public school students could soon see their cell phones taken away while in school if a proposed bill passes the legislature this year. Rep. Joel Kitchens of Sturgeon Bay is proposing legislation that would require all districts to have some policy in place that at least keeps cell phones away during class time, but it does allow a district to ban them bell to bell if it chooses. The bill does have exceptions for educational purposes, medical reasons or family emergencies. Eight other states have similar cell phone policies, and over a dozen have proposals like this one awaiting approval.
