U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke L. Rollins announced Sunday the immediate suspension of live cattle, horses, and bison imports through U.S. ports of entry along the southern border. This is due to the continued and rapid northward spread of New World Screwworm (NWS) in Mexico. A band on Mexican cattle imports to the U.S. will likely lead to higher beef prices for consumers due to reduced supply and increased demand. Mexican cattle imports of over one million head are a vital part of the U.S> beef supply chain. November and December are typically when the U.S. imports the largest number of cattle from Mexico. this is the second time in just over six months that U.S. has closed the border for cattle imports because of New World Screwwworm.
