About 200 years of history has ended up taking four years to restore. Potosi Township Historical Society members are wrapping up the restoration of British Hollow Smelter, a lead region relic from the 1830s. Located just north of Potosi on Hippy Hollow Road, the smelter is believed by historical society President Dennis Yoose to be the only remaining one of its kind in the region, if not the country. It was designed with an underground chimney — the Old World style. Of the $60,000 project, only about $5,000 to $10,000 is needed for the final steps, the priciest of which is laying gravel on the hillside to cover building materials outlining the chimney. Volunteers might also repaint a replica cannon next to the landmark’s parking lot.
