The Iowa County Sheriff’s Office issued an urgent warning after they said scammers targeted residents claiming they missed jury duty and have an arrest warrant. A sheriff’s office spokesperson said the scammers often pressure residents to avoid arrest by paying a “fine” using untraceable payment kiosks and other nontraditional payment methods. The scammers also use caller ID-spoofing software to make their calls appear to be coming from the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office. The Iowa County Sheriff’s Office will never demand payment or threaten arrest over the phone. They will never ask for payment via a kiosk, wire transfer, gift card or crypto currency and will never collect fines to prevent arrests. If you think you are receiving a scam call, don’t provide any personal or financial information, hang up immediately and call the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office at 608-930-9500 to verify whether or not a call was legitimate.
