Wisconsin could soon join a growing number of states banning cell phones in classrooms as lawmakers debate new legislation targeting digital distractions. The proposed bill, introduced by Wisconsin GOP legislators, would require all public school districts to prohibit students from using cell phones during instructional time, with limited exceptions for emergencies and health management. Schools would still be permitted to implement stricter policies if desired. A recent DPI survey found most districts already restrict student cell phone usage to common areas like cafeterias and hallways. The legislation has passed the state Assembly but awaits a Senate vote. If approved, Wisconsin would join 19 other states, including neighboring Iowa, with similar statewide restrictions.
