A 79-year-old man was killed Tuesday after a tree fell on him while he was working alone on his rural Iowa County property. According to the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office, just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, officials performed a welfare check at a residence on Weaver Road in Wyoming. The caller told police that 79-year-old Keith J. Symon had not returned after going out to cut logs with his tractor and chainsaw. Emergency crews from multiple departments searched 75 to 80 acres of heavily wooded terrain. With thick tree cover and limited cell service, responders used UTVs to access remote areas, but search conditions were difficult. Officials found his tractor shortly after 11 a.m. and he was found deceased nearby. Iowa County officials said the investigation showed Symon had gotten his small tractor stuck and attempted to recover it by moving it to a nearby tree. During this process, officials said the tree gave way and fell over.
