Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers raised the Progress Pride Flag over the State Capitol on Friday, marking the seventh consecutive year he has kicked off Pride Month with the ceremonial flag-raising. The Wisconsin Progress Pride Flag features additional stripes beyond the traditional rainbow design, specifically representing LGBTQ people of color, the transgender community, and individuals affected by HIV/AIDS. Evers has made the Pride Month flag-raising an annual tradition since taking office, using the ceremony to demonstrate the state’s commitment to LGBTQ inclusion and equality. This year’s flag-raising occurs amid political tension over the practice. Republican legislators are currently advancing legislation that would restrict which flags can be displayed on government buildings. If passed, the Republican-backed legislation would effectively end the Pride flag tradition at the State Capitol and other state buildings.
