U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson is sounding the alarm on the future of the nation’s finances, advocating for deeper cuts in spending. The senator released a 30-page report challenging President Trump’s “big, beautiful bill”, saying that the bill could dig the country into a bigger financial hole. In his budget reconciliation report, he believes the president’s signature legislation won’t even come close to reducing the federal deficit and urges Congress to take a closer look. Within the report, Sen. Johnson compares spending prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, when he says federal deficits averaged about $660 billion. He says government spending increased during the pandemic, pushing deficits to nearly $2 trillion. Johnson believes President Trump’s legislation, as it stands, would increase that even further. Johnson suggests a 14.6% cut to federal spending that he says will put the U.S. back to the pre-pandemic deficit levels in 10 years.
