The City of Dubuque AmeriCorps program has been awarded $362,250 in federal funds, just a few months after the Trump administration cancelled funding for the program in April. Starting in September, the year-long AmeriCorps grant will let the city recruit 34 members to provide recreational and mentoring opportunities for children. After the City of Dubuque got a letter in April from the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, ordering the termination of money for AmeriCorps members, the Multicultural Family Center put the Summer Teen Empowerment Program (STEP) on hold. The AmeriCorps members will also serve at the Dubuque Community School District, Hillcrest Family Services, Carnegie Stout Public Library, and the Dubuque Parks and Recreation Department. Dubuque will need to apply for the next cycle of AmeriCorps grants by November 2025.
