The Platteville Police Department is alerting residents to a gold scam after two people reported being scammed out of a large amount of money. According to a Facebook post by the city’s police department on Tuesday, this scam is targeting elderly residents. Officials said the scammer will contact the victim claiming to be a government agent and claims the victim has a warrant or several warrants that need to be satisfied or they will be arrested. The scammers tell the victim to purchase gold to satisfy the warrant and not to tell anyone about the situation. Then the caller instructs the victim to purchase gold from a gold dealer in the area and once the gold is purchased, a person will then meet the victim to pick up the gold. Platteville officials emphasized that they will never request gold, bitcoin, gift cards, or any other form of payment to satisfy a warrant. Officials encourage anyone who has been contacted by a scammer or is a victim to contact police.
