A Dubuque man is now behind bars and facing multiple charges after police say he fled a crash scene and left two injured children behind. A criminal complaint says Dubuque Police officers were responding to a crash in the intersection of University and Irving on July 2 around 10 :30 a.m. While on the way, officers were told 37-year-old Corlandis Chester had taken two small children from the car and left the scene on foot. Police later found the two kids – aged 7 and 8 – in the backyard of a house in the 1500 block of Auburn Street. Both kids were hurt and one had to be flown to Iowa City for a skull fracture and bleeding in the brain. The other child had a cut on her nose and was kept at the hospital for observation. Chester has been charged with driving while barred, neglect or abandonment of a dependent person, child endangerment, and knowingly leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury.
