Dwight T. Parker Public Library is gearing up for a centennial makeover. Three weeks after a ceremonial groundbreaking, Madison-based McKee Associates is awaiting confirmation on the delivery of some necessary supplies, but is hoping to start excavation next week on an extensive addition to the building, according to Library Director Cathy Smith. Among the main goals of the new addition is accessibility. To access the library building, visitors need to climb outdoor steps and then use indoor stairs to access either of the library’s two levels. The addition will include an accessible front entrance. The new building also features space for community gatherings as well as additional space for community members to connect to high-speed internet. Library staff are preparing for a temporary relocation, which will start in the middle to end of August and last until construction is completed, according to Smith. Smith declined to disclose the library’s temporary location, citing a need to finalize a relocation contract. However, she said the temporary facility will be in a central location and include 15% to 20% of available items, while the rest are taken out of circulation and stored due to space constraints. For updates on the relocation and project visit the library’s website or Facebook page.
