The University of Wisconsin Police Department was on the scene of an active police incident Monday on the east side of the UW Arboretum. The police urged the public to avoid the area, as it was deemed as “very dangerous.” The initial notification was sent roughly at 10 a.m. In an 10:35 a.m. update, UWPD said police remained on scene and were investigating a “suspicious object that was found on a path in the Arboretum.” In a press conference just after 11 a.m., Marc Lovicott said that a passerby located what appeared to be a grenade sitting on the boardwalk and reported it to UWPD. The bomb squad confirmed that the object was a “training device.” He also added that similar cases have been observed across the country, with people finding these old devices and leaving them in plain sight. The K9 unit was finishing up a final precautionary sweep and Arboretum Drive reopened by 11:30 a.m.
