ESPN, Colin Kaepernick, and director Spike Lee have decided to cancel the planned docuseries about Kaepernick’s life and NFL career. The project, which was first announced in 2020 as part of Kaepernick’s deal with Disney, was set to feature “extensive new interviews and a vast never-before-seen archive.” In a statement, ESPN cited “certain creative differences” as the reason for no longer proceeding with the film. Lee confirmed the documentary would not be released, but declined to elaborate further, citing a nondisclosure agreement. Kaepernick played for the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2016, before sparking a media firestorm by kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality. He left the 49ers in 2017 and filed a grievance against the NFL, alleging collusion among team owners. The case was privately settled in 2019. Since then, Kaepernick has focused on activism and media projects. (Variety)
