In a major shift, MSNBC will soon be rebranding as “MS NOW” as part of the spin-off of NBCUniversal’s cable assets into a new publicly traded company, Versant. The decision was driven by NBCUniversal’s desire to retain exclusive use of the iconic Peacock logo and branding. This means MSNBC will need to establish its own distinct identity. MSNBC’s chief, Rebecca Kutler, said the change “allows us to set our own course and assert our independence as we continue to build our own modern newsgathering operation.” The network will also focus on expanding its digital and direct-to-consumer offerings. While the new “MS NOW” name may cause some initial confusion, prominent MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow expressed support, noting it reflects the network’s growing separation and competition with NBC News.
