Rep. Mark Pocan made stops at cafes across western Wisconsin on Tuesday, visiting communities in Wisconsin’s Third Congressional District to discuss the ongoing government shutdown and expiring health care tax credits. The Wisconsin Second District Democrat visited cafes in Richland Center, Viroqua, La Crosse and Eau Claire to discuss federal policy with constituents. Pocan focused on Affordable Care Act tax credits set to expire, warning the expiration would affect anyone with private health insurance, not just marketplace purchasers. The tax credit issue has become entangled with government funding negotiations. The health care tax credits help millions of Americans afford insurance premiums. Their expiration could lead to significant premium increases nationwide. Wisconsin’s Third District includes rural communities that rely heavily on federal programs. The district is represented by Rep. Derrick Van Orden, a Republican.
