Wisconsin hunters can help families struggling to buy food by donating deer through the state’s Deer Donation Program. The Department of Natural Resources said the program helps hunters give venison to food pantries. Since the program started in 2000, hunters have given more than 100,000 deer equaling over 4 million pounds of venison to help Wisconsin families. To donate a deer, hunters must clean it properly, register it, and call participating meat processors before dropping it off. Deer caught in some counties need to be tested for chronic wasting disease before donation. Hunters and others can also help the program by donating money at hunting license sales locations or online.
