Sexual extortion, or sextortion, is now a felony in Wisconsin under a new law signed Monday by Democratic Governor Tony Evers. The legislation, which secured bipartisan support in the State Legislature, was crafted in response to the death of a 15-year-old D.C. Everest High School student who died by suicide in March after being the victim of sexual extortion. “Bradyn’s Law” creates a new felony specific to sextortion – a form of child sexual exploitation in which someone threatens or blackmails a child into sending them nude or sexual images or money. Offenders typically threaten to go public with the photos if the victim does not meet their demands. D.C. Everest High School is located between Stevens Point and Wausau.
