The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released the preliminary report for the deadly Monroe plane crash that killed a 43-year-old Oshkosh man and a 41-year-old Omro man last month. On Nov. 24, the single engine plane departed from Oshkosh Wittman Airport at around 4:41 p.m. At 5:04 p.m., air traffic control said the airplane was cleared for the approach at the Monroe Municipal Airport. The report shows that they attempted to land in dense fog, with visibility well below the minimum required for the approach. Before landing, the pilot said, “if we can get in there it will be a full stop, if not we will go missed [approach] back to Oshkosh.” ADS-B data and witness reports show the plane climbing and turning before it struck mining equipment at a gravel quarry about half a mile north of the airport. The aircraft was destroyed in a post-impact explosion. The National Transportation Safety Board said in its report it will continue to investigate the crash.
