One year after the tragic shooting at Abundant Life Christian School (ALCS), efforts to improve school safety continue to evolve amid stalled gun regulation legislation at the state capitol. Representative Shelia Stubbs introduced four new bills aimed at making schools safer and supporting mental health resources. The proposed bills include establishing pre-recorded, standardized lockdown announcements to ensure clear and consistent communication during emergencies; requiring every school safety plan to incorporate procedures for timely notification of students and families in case of an emergency; creating a grant program to support volunteers in schools who help students connect with trusted adults; and launching a grant program to assist school counselors pursuing advanced education in mental and behavioral health. Representative Stubbs emphasized that some of the ideas came directly from students during listening sessions held last January.
