Indiana traffic stop leads to homicide investigation in Wisconsin

A Juneau County man faces murder charges in the death of his father. Prosecutors filed first degree homicide charges last week against 34-year-old Jacob Sanders of Mauston. Mauston police allege Sanders killed 73-year-old Michael Sanders last Wednesday and then stole his car and fled the state. He was arrested in Indiana where police allege there was blood in the car and on Jacob’s hands. Jacob is being held in the Vigo County Indiana jail awaiting extradition. The cause of Michael Sanders’ death has not been released.

A traffic stop in Vigo County, Ind., last week began a homicide investigation in Wisconsin. 34-year-old Jacob Sanders of Wisconsin, was arrested and is currently being held in Vigo County on Indiana charges of theft, criminal conversion and operating a vehicle without ever having obtained a driver’s license. The Vigo County Sheriffs Department said they noticed Sanders driving  and not wearing a seatbelt, but when he saw the Sherrif, he quickly turned into a parking lot without signaling. When the sheriff stopped Sanders he noticed blood on Sanders’ hands and on the steering wheel. Sanders said the vehicle belonged to his father and that his father would “probably not” confirm he had permission to drive the vehicle. The deputy contacted the Mauston Police Department and the Juneau County Sheriff’s Department in Wisconsin, informed them of his observations and requested a welfare check on Jacob Sanders’ father. Shortly after, Wisconsin authorities advised Michael Sanders, Jacob’s father, had been found dead and they were beginning a homicide investigation. Sanders is due in court this week. If charges are filed in Wisconsin, authorities there would initiate extradition proceedings.
