Lancaster Common Council members will vote next month regarding a proposal to allow some hunting on city-owned property. City officials are drafting an ordinance that would allow hunting on the land along County Highway K – known as the Lancaster Trail. The property used to be the city landfill, but now has miles of hiking and biking trails. Council members say that under the proposal, the trails would be closed to the public during Wisconsin’s 9-day gun deer hunting season. The Lancaster Trail property would also allow bow hunting and remain open to the public during that hunting season. According to Lancaster city officials, only let licensed hunters – who have passed a Wisconsin DNR hunter safety course – could hunt on the land. The council is planning to vote on the ordinance at its February meeting.
