According to ESPN, the agreement is not final, but is in the final stages of negotiation. The list of things the Packers reportedly been willing to give Rodgers includes voiding the last year of his current contract in 2023 with a promise not to use a franchise tag on him in the future and a review of Rodgers’ status with the organization after this season.
In return, Rodgers’ current contract would also be adjusted to give the team more salary cap room now.
Rodgers’ frustration with the Packers’ decision-makers was first publicly reported by Schefter and ESPN on the day of the first round of the NFL Draft. At various points in the offseason, it was reported that Rodgers did not want to return to the Packers and was looking for a trade, or would even consider retirement if the situation did not change to his liking.
While Rodgers himself rarely directly addressed the situation during the offseason, he did say the conflict was rooted more in philosophy and culture than it was about money or how the team was built.
The news of Rodgers’ possible return comes on the same day as the annual Packers’ Shareholders Meeting, and just two days before training camp opens on Wednesday.
