The Packers’ tight end was injured on a big 33-yard reception that took the Packers into scoring position late in the game. Tonyan was able to walk off the field under his own power and slowly walked back to the locker room, but an MRI Friday morning confirmed the ligament tear.
After the game Thursday night, Packers coach Matt LaFleur said he was “sick for Bobby.”
“He means so much to our team. I’m sick for him, I’m sick for us,” LaFleur said.
Tonyan emerged as a big-play target for Aaron Rodgers and the Packers last season, when he broke out for 52 receptions and 586 yards with 11 touchdowns. After a slow start this season, Tonyan was coming off his best game of the season, when he caught 4 passes for 63 yards and a touchdown against Washington this past Sunday.
Without Tonyan, Marcedes Lewis and Josiah Deguara may see a bigger role in the offense.
Tonyan is not the only Packer who tore his ACL on Thursday night. Reports indicate rookie running back Kylin Hill, who was injured on a violent hit on a kickoff return, also tore his ACL and will be out for the season.
